National Back to School Month: Dental Checklist

five kids arm in arm wearing backpacks heading back to school

August has arrived, which means it’s national back to school month! Around the country, parents are running around making sure their kids have everything they need to start the school year off on the right foot. Along with checking off standard to-dos like getting new outfits, buying new school supplies, and signing up for extracurricular activities, don’t forget to take care of your child’s dental checklist, too!

Book a Back-to-School Dental Visit

One of the most important things on the dental checklist is to schedule that routine dental appointment. If possible, find a time before school actually starts so you don’t have to worry about pulling your kid out of class to take them to the doctor. It also gives you more time to handle any issues like cavities, which would require more time out of school. On top of that, you can get them fitted with an athletic mouthguard already if they’re going to be on any sports teams so they’re all ready to go when practice starts.

Get New Brushing Gear

Did you know that toothbrushes should be replaced every three months? Starting a new school year is the perfect time to swap out your kid’s old, used brush for a sparkly brand new one. Extra tip: Bring them along to the store so they can pick out the one they like. Having one they think is awesome can help motivate them to brush more!

Stock Up on Healthy Snacks

Make a grocery trip to pick up nutritious snacks, such as fruit, nuts, and cheese sticks, that will be better for your child’s dental health than things like soda, candy, and chips. If you’re going to be making school lunches for your child, you’ll be grateful to have these at the ready during those crazy weekday mornings. It’ll also be nice to have them on hand when your kid comes home from school looking for a bite to eat!
