What Are the Best Tooth Replacement Options?

Tooth loss is not unusual in adults, especially as people get older. Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss, but you can lose teeth for other reasons. Even if you take great care of your teeth, you might lose one in an accident. Replacing missing teeth restores your smile and improves your life! What are the best tooth replacement options at Overland Park Family Dental?

Fixed Dental Bridges

Bridges are most commonly used when you’re missing at least one tooth. In a bridge, one or more false teeth fill in the gap left by teeth you’ve lost. There’s a dental crown on either side of the false teeth, so the bridge is supported. A fixed bridge is not removable.

Dentures

Dentures have been around a long time. They’ve dramatically improved over the years. Today, partial or full dentures are good options if you’re missing quite a few teeth or even an entire arch. Partial dentures are used when you still have teeth left, but unlike a fixed bridge, this type of tooth replacement is removable. Full dentures are also removed for cleaning.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are different from other tooth replacement options because they replace the root of a tooth. The actual implant, a biocompatible post, is surgically placed into your jaw. Once it’s fused and healed, we place a crown on top of the new “root.” This replacement option prevents your jaw bone from shrinking over time.

Implant-Supported Dentures

If your traditional dentures are annoying, we offer implant-supported dentures. We put 4-5 implants into your jaw. These serve as anchors for your dentures, making them much more secure and natural-feeling. You also clean them like your natural teeth. Implant-supported dentures are only removed by a dentist.

What’s the Best Choice for You?

The tooth replacement option that works best for you depends on your specific needs and budget. Dr. Gallagher will consider factors like your oral health and whether your jawbone has shrunk before making a recommendation.
